Spring is when the construction year wakes up — and when equipment demand, rental rates and competition for good machines climb with it. As of early June 2026, the setup favors buyers who move early: soft used values and tight inventory, against a backdrop of steady underlying demand. Here’s the timing read.
A dated snapshot. The figures below are tied to specific reports and their dates, and conditions vary by region. Use them to time your move, not as a guarantee.
The season rewards the early. Demand peaks in mid-summer, so the best selection and the softest prices sit in late winter and early spring — before everyone else starts looking.
Why spring matters
In most of North America the building season ramps from late April, peaks around early summer, and tapers in late summer; warm-climate states run closer to year-round. As projects start, demand for excavators, loaders and dozers rises, available inventory tightens, and rental rates firm up. That seasonal curve is why when you buy or list can matter almost as much as what.
Demand is holding up
The underlying market is firm heading into the season:
- Spending and starts are up. U.S. construction spending reached a $2.17-trillion annual rate in April 2026, and Dodge reported total construction starts up 9% in April.
- Backlog is rising. ABC’s Construction Backlog Indicator rose to 8.8 months in April 2026, with contractor confidence still in expansion.
- But it’s uneven. AGC’s 2026 outlook shows strength concentrated in data centers, power and manufacturing megaprojects, with some private segments cautious amid tariff and labor headwinds.
The used market right now
Against that demand, used pricing is soft and inventory is thin. The April 2026 used-equipment data showed auction values down about 1% month-over-month and available inventory down roughly 11% year-over-year. For the full category-by-category picture, see our used equipment price check.
How to time it
- Buyers: shop in late winter / early spring, before the demand peak thins selection and firms prices. Line up financing first so you can move on the right machine, and run the buying checklist before you commit.
- Sellers: list into the rising spring/summer demand, when buyer urgency and rental rates climb — and price to current comps, not last year’s peak.
